Travel Calculators

Drive time with breaks.

Enter the distance and your average speed, then how often and how long you stop. See the driving time, the number of breaks, the total door-to-door time and the clock time you will arrive. Distance and speed must use the same unit (km and km/h, or miles and mph).

Use the average including towns and traffic, not the posted limit.

Enter 0 for no breaks. Many safety organisations advise a rest about every two hours of driving.

Worked example

600 km at an average of 100 km/h is 6 hours of driving. With a 15 minute break after every 2 hours there are 2 breaks (after hours 2 and 4; no break is counted at the end), adding 30 minutes. Total time is 6 h 30 min, so leaving at 08:00 you arrive at 14:30.

How it works

Driving time = distance / average speed. One break is added for each full break interval you drive before the end of the trip: breaks = ceil(driving hours / interval) - 1. Total time = driving + breaks x break length + extra stops. Arrival time is the departure time plus the total, wrapped past midnight with the day shown.

The average speed is the biggest source of error. Mountain roads, city traffic, border crossings and construction pull it down. Time zone changes along the route are not applied; the arrival is on the clock of your departure place.

Sources and basis (checked 2026-10-05): Arithmetic on the numbers you enter. The 2 hour break default is a common driving-safety recommendation, not a legal requirement; commercial driver hours rules are separate and not modelled.

FAQ

How do I calculate drive time?

Divide the distance by your average speed. A 300 km trip at 100 km/h is 3 hours before any stops.

How many breaks should I take on a long drive?

Road safety guidance commonly suggests a break about every two hours. You can change the interval to match your own plan.

Does it account for traffic?

No. Use a lower average speed to allow for traffic, towns and construction.

Why is there no break at the end?

You are arriving, so the last stretch does not need a rest stop. A trip of exactly 4 hours with breaks every 2 hours has 1 break, not 2.

Does it handle time zones?

Arrival is shown on the clock where you start. If you cross time zones, add or subtract the difference with the time difference calculator.
