Worked example
Passport expiry 28 February 2027, leaving on 31 August 2026, 6 month rule: 31 August + 6 months is 31 February, which does not exist, so the date is clamped to the last day of the month, 2027-02-28. The passport expires that day, so it passes with 0 days spare (valid). One day earlier, 27 February 2027, fails by 1 day.
How it works
Required until = departure date + required months, with month-end clamping (31 August + 6 months = 28 February). The passport passes if its expiry date is on or after that date. Whether the rule counts from the day you arrive or the day you leave depends on the country; enter the date that matches the rule you are checking.
The Schengen preset reflects the Schengen Borders Code (Regulation (EU) 2016/399, Article 6(1)(a)): a passport should be valid for at least three months after the intended date of departure from the Schengen area and have been issued within the previous ten years. Many other countries require six months. Rules and exceptions change, so treat this as a check of your dates and confirm the requirement itself with an official source.
Sources and basis (checked 2026-10-05): Regulation (EU) 2016/399 (Schengen Borders Code), Article 6(1)(a) for the 3 month and 10 year rules. The 6 month figure is a common requirement set by individual countries and is user-editable. Checked 2026-10-05.
FAQ
What is the six month passport rule?
Some countries require your passport to be valid for six months beyond your arrival or departure date. Airlines can deny boarding if it is not.
How many months do I need for Schengen?
At least three months after you plan to leave the Schengen area, and the passport must have been issued within the previous ten years.
Does the validity count from arrival or departure?
It depends on the country. Check the official requirement and enter the matching date. The Schengen rule counts from the intended departure date.
Is the month-end handled correctly?
Yes. If adding months lands on a day that does not exist, the tool uses the last day of that month.
Can I travel if my passport falls short by a few days?
Possibly not. Border and airline staff apply the rule strictly in many cases. Renew early; do not rely on exceptions.
