Worked example
500 km one way at 8 L/100 km uses 500 x 8 / 100 = 40 L. At 1.60 per litre that is 64.00 of fuel. Add 10.00 tolls, one night in 2 rooms at 100 (200.00) and 30 per person per day for food for 4 people over 2 days (240.00). The total is 514.00, or 128.50 each.
How it works
Fuel = distance x consumption x price. L/100 km figures use litres = km x L/100 / 100. For mpg, litres = miles / mpg x 3.785411784 (US gallon) or x 4.54609 (imperial gallon); 1 mile = 1.609344 km. Fuel cost multiplies the volume in the unit you price fuel in. Lodging = nights x rooms x price; food = per person per day x travellers x days. Per person = total / travellers.
The split is equal. If one traveller drives their own car or shares a room, enter a smaller figure for those lines or run the calculator twice. Real consumption changes with speed, load, towing and weather, so use your own measured figure if you have one.
Sources and basis (checked 2026-10-05): Unit conversions: 1 mile = 1.609344 km (international yard and pound agreement); 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 L; 1 imperial gallon = 4.54609 L. Arithmetic on the numbers you enter.
FAQ
How do I split gas money fairly on a road trip?
Add fuel, tolls and shared costs and divide by the number of travellers. This tool does that and shows each category so everyone can see where the total comes from.
How do I calculate fuel for a road trip?
Multiply the distance by your consumption (L/100 km or miles per gallon) and then by the fuel price. Use the round trip option to double the distance.
Which mpg do I use, US or imperial?
US mpg is based on the 3.785 L gallon; imperial (UK) mpg on the 4.546 L gallon, so the same car shows a higher imperial mpg. Pick the one your vehicle reports.
Does it include car wear or insurance?
No. Add depreciation or a per-km allowance under "Other costs" if you want to share those too.
Can I use it to compare driving with flying?
Yes. Enter the same trip and compare the per person figure with a fare, then add airport transfers and baggage for the flight.
