Worked example

Foil soak, one hand at a time, 10 extra minutes, starting at 14:00. Foil takes 10 to 15 minutes per soak (Healthline), so two soaks are 20 to 30 minutes, plus 10 = 30 to 40 minutes, finishing between 14:30 and 14:40. With plastic wrap on both hands at once the soak is 10 minutes (AAD), so with 10 extra minutes the total is 20.

How it works

Total minutes = soak time x number of rounds + your extra minutes. Plastic wrap is a fixed 10 minutes; foil is 10 to 15 minutes. One hand at a time is two rounds; both at once is one. Finish time = start time + total.

What this is not. The AAD says most or all of the gel polish should be gone after 10 minutes under plastic wrap; Healthline says to allow 10 to 15 minutes with foil and check whether the polish lifts. Neither source covers builder gel, dip powder or acrylic, which may behave differently. A dermatologist quoted by the AAD says the best way to remove gel polish is to let your nails grow out. After soaking, the AAD advises rubbing petroleum jelly into the cuticles and surrounding skin every day for seven days to reduce irritation from the acetone.

FAQ

How long does it take to soak off gel polish?

The American Academy of Dermatology says to leave acetone-soaked cotton under plastic wrap for 10 minutes, after which most or all of the gel polish should be gone. Healthline says 10 to 15 minutes with foil.

Is plastic wrap better than foil?

The AAD says plastic wrap creates a tighter seal than foil, so the acetone is less likely to drip. Foil works too, and Healthline suggests allowing 10 to 15 minutes.

What should I do after removing gel polish?

The AAD recommends rubbing petroleum jelly gently into your cuticles and the skin around your nails every day for seven days to reduce irritation from the acetone. The tool lists those seven dates.

Can I peel gel polish off instead?

The AAD says picking and scraping off the polish can damage your nails and the best way to remove gel polish is to let the nails grow out, or to use the soak-off method.

Why is my gel polish still stuck after 10 minutes?

Neither source covers thick layers, builder gel or dip powder. Re-wrap and check again rather than scraping hard, and see a professional if it will not come off.
