A customer pays $100.00 online. Fee = $100.00 x 2.8% + $0.30 = $3.10, so you keep $96.90. The same sale in person at Square's card-present rate of 2.5% with no fixed fee would cost $2.50, which is why the choice of rate and channel matters more on small tickets. To net the full $100.00 online, charge ($100.00 + $0.30) / (1 - 0.028) = $103.19, rounded up to the cent.
How it works
Fee = sale x (percentage + extra percentage) + fixed fee. Presets were read on 2026-10-08. Square Canada lists 2.5% for card present, 2.8% + 30 cents for card not present, 3.3% + 15 cents for keyed-in cards, and 1.5% more on cards issued outside Canada. Shopify Canada lists, for the Basic plan, 2.8% + 30 cents for online standard cards, 3.5% + 30 cents for online international cards and 2.6% + 0 cents for in-person cards; higher plans list lower rates. Verify every figure on the provider site.
