Payment fees
Processing fee gross-up calculator.
Enter the amount you want to receive and your percentage and fixed fee. See the exact price to charge so the fee comes out of the extra, not out of your pocket.
To keep $100.00 after a 2.9% + $0.30 fee, charge $103.30: ($100.00 + $0.30) / (1 - 0.029) = $103.2956, rounded up to the cent. Adding 2.9% and $0.30 to $100.00 instead gives $103.20 and leaves you $0.09 short.

Worked example
You want to receive $100.00. Charge ($100.00 + $0.30) / (1 - 0.029) = $103.2956, rounded up to $103.30. The fee on $103.30 is $103.30 x 2.9% + $0.30 = $3.30, leaving $100.00. The common shortcut of $100.00 x 1.029 + $0.30 = $103.20 keeps only $99.91, because the percentage fee is also charged on the fee you added.
How it works
Price = (target + fixed fee) / (1 - percentage fee). The percentage is taken from the price you charge, not from your target, so the price has to be divided by (1 - rate) rather than multiplied by (1 + rate). The result is rounded up to the next cent so the net never falls below the target.
Whether you may add a fee, label it as a surcharge or must fold it into the price depends on your jurisdiction, card network and processor; see the surcharge calculator. For a given provider's rates, start from the Stripe or PayPal calculator. Sales tax is separate: add it on top of the price you charge.
Estimates only, from numbers you enter. Not legal, tax or financial advice. Rates and rules change: verify them with your provider.

FAQ
What is the formula to net a target amount after fees?
Price = (target + fixed fee) / (1 - percentage fee as a decimal). For a $100.00 target at 2.9% + $0.30 that is $103.30 after rounding up to the cent.
Why not just add the percentage to my price?
Because the percentage is charged on the larger price, including the amount you added. Multiplying by 1.029 leaves you short; dividing by 0.971 does not.
Can I add this to the customer bill?
It depends on where you operate and on your card network and processor. Some places restrict or ban surcharges, and some require disclosure. Check before you charge it. This is not legal advice.
Does it work with a fixed fee only or a percentage only?
Yes. Set the other field to 0. With no percentage the price is simply the target plus the fixed fee.
Does it include taxes?
No. Add sales tax on top of the price you charge, and check whether tax applies to the fee.
