Worked example

A Canadian seller sells a $100 item with $10 shipping charged to a buyer who pays 13% HST, in a "most categories" listing. The total amount of the sale is ($100 + $10) x 1.13 = $124.30. Final value fee: 13.6% x $124.30 = $16.90. Per-order fee (order over $10): $0.40. Fees total $17.30. The tax is collected for the government, so you receive $110 - $17.30 = $92.70, and after $40 item cost, $8 postage and $1 packaging your profit is $43.70. To make $30 profit on those costs, list at $83.82.

How it works

Total amount of the sale. eBay.ca's selling fees page defines it as the item price, handling charges, shipping costs collected from the buyer, sales tax and other applicable fees. The percentage is charged on that total, so provincial tax raises your fee even though the tax is not your revenue.

Tiers. Most categories are 13.6% up to $7,500 and 2.35% above. Books, Magazines, Movies & TV and non-vinyl Music are 15.3%; Coins & Paper Money (not bullion), comic books, trading cards and collectible card games 13.25%; Guitars & Basses 6.7%; Heavy Equipment, printing presses, food trucks and trailers 3% up to $15,000 and 0.5% above. Athletic Shoes are 8% with no per-order fee when the starting price is $150 or more, and 13.6% below that.

Per-order fee. $0.30 on orders of $10.00 or less, $0.40 above. International fee. None for a Canadian seller who offers eBay International Shipping on eligible listings; otherwise 0.4% of the total sale for the United States and 1% for other countries when the delivery or buyer's address is outside Canada. Below Standard accounts pay 6 more percentage points the next month (7 after four consecutive months).

Limits

The shipping rules for 1-day and international shipping options, where the fee is based on the cheapest domestic option, are not modelled; enter the shipping you actually charge. Insertion fees ($0.30 per listing after 250 free a month, higher for real estate and some business categories), Store subscriptions, the seller currency conversion charge (3.25% for Canadian-registered sellers), reserve and other upgrades, NFT categories and bullion are not modelled.
