Method and limits
S3 is priced as in the S3 tool (graduated storage and egress tiers, 100 GB free egress). R2 applies its free tier (10 GB-month, 1 million Class A and 10 million Class B operations) and charges nothing for egress. Class A is mapped to PUT/LIST-type operations and Class B to GET-type operations, which is an approximation.

Frequently asked questions
Is Cloudflare R2 egress really free?
The R2 pricing page states that direct egress from R2 does not incur data transfer charges. Storage and operations are still billed.
Is R2 always cheaper than S3?
Not necessarily. For a workload with little egress the difference is mostly storage price, and request charges can change the result. Enter your own volumes to see.
Which classes are compared?
R2 Standard and S3 Standard. R2 Infrequent Access and other S3 classes have different rates and retrieval fees and are excluded.
What about migration cost?
Moving data out of S3 is itself internet egress. That one-time cost is not part of this monthly comparison; price it in the S3 egress tool.
