Cloud cost · unit economics

Cloud cost per request, from bill to unit price.

Turn a monthly cloud bill and request count into a unit cost, and compare list prices for one serverless request.

Cost per request = monthly cloud cost ÷ requests. Multiply by 1,000 or 1,000,000 for per-thousand and per-million figures. Fixed costs are split out so you can see the marginal price.

Method and limits

The top block is plain division: bill ÷ requests, with fixed costs (a minimum instance, a database, a plan fee) separated to show the variable cost per request. The second block prices one request at list rates with no free tier: Cloud Run request-based billing (duration rounded up to 100 ms, vCPU and GiB-seconds plus the $0.40 per million request fee, divided by concurrency), Azure Functions Consumption (100 ms and 128 MB minimums, 128 MB buckets, $0.000016 per GB-second plus $0.20 per million executions), and Azure Functions Flex on demand (1,000 ms minimum, instance memory, $0.000026 per GB-second plus $0.40 per million executions).

These are marginal compute prices. Free grants, networking, storage, logging and databases are excluded, and Flex instance sharing is approximated with the concurrency field.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate cost per request?

Divide the total cost for the period by the number of requests. A $250 bill over 5 million requests is $0.00005 per request, $0.05 per 1,000 and $50 per million.

Why separate fixed and variable cost?

Fixed costs fall per request as traffic grows, while variable costs stay roughly constant. The variable figure is the better guide to what the next million requests will cost.

How much does a Cloud Run request cost?

At list price a 200 ms request on 1 vCPU and 0.5 GiB costs about $0.00000505 of compute plus $0.0000004 for the request fee, before the free tier and concurrency savings.

Why include Azure Functions?

Cloud Run and Azure Functions bill differently: by vCPU and GiB-seconds versus GB-seconds and executions. Putting one workload through both shows the unit price difference.
