PE license verification and NCEES.

Professional engineering licences are issued by state licensing boards. NCEES, which writes the exams, publishes a Member Licensing Board Directory so you can find the board that holds the record.

Important, up front: this is a guide, not a verification service. It links to the official register and never queries it for you. The live record on the official site is the only thing that confirms a licence.

How to check, step by step

  1. Ask which state licenses the engineer and get the licence number.
  2. Open the NCEES board directory, find that state, and follow its link to the board.
  3. Use the board’s licence lookup to confirm the person, licence status and any discipline.
  4. Do not treat an NCEES exam or record as a licence: per NCEES, licensure is granted by licensing boards after education, experience and exam requirements.

No public check-digit formula exists for these licence numbers, so there is nothing to validate offline: a number that looks right proves nothing until the regulator’s record confirms it.

Official lookups

Links open the regulator’s own site in a new tab. Nothing you type there passes through TNAADO.

Why check a licence

Clients, permitting offices and employers verify a PE seal or licence number before relying on engineering drawings or reports.

Frequently asked questions

Does NCEES verify PE licences?

NCEES describes licensure as a state-board process. Use the board directory to find the board that holds the licence record.

How do I verify an engineer’s license in my state?

Find your state’s board in the NCEES directory and use the board’s lookup, or the state’s consolidated licence search if one exists.

Can one PE be licensed in several states?

Yes, many engineers hold licences in more than one state. Check each board for the state where the work is done.

Guide only — not an official verification
