Contractor license lookup California, Florida, Texas.

California contractors are checked on CSLB’s Check A License page, Florida licences on the DBPR Licensing Portal, and Texas state-licensed trades such as electricians and air-conditioning contractors on TDLR’s search.

Important, up front: this is a guide, not a verification service. It links to the official register and never queries it for you. The live record on the official site is the only thing that confirms a licence.

How to check, step by step

  1. California: enter the contractor licence number (digits only, up to 8) or the business name. CSLB says to type the last name first if the business name starts with a person’s name.
  2. Check licence status and any complaint disclosure CSLB shows, and look at its Hiring a Contractor guidance before signing.
  3. Florida: search the DBPR portal by name or licence number and read the status.
  4. Texas: choose the license type in TDLR’s search. TDLR’s list covers specific trades (for example Electricians, Air Conditioning Contractors, Elevator Contractors) and shows no general contractor type, so also ask your city or county about local registration.

No public check-digit formula exists for these licence numbers, so there is nothing to validate offline: a number that looks right proves nothing until the regulator’s record confirms it.

Why check a licence

Homeowners and property managers check a contractor’s licence before paying a deposit. The rules differ by state, so the right register depends on where the job is.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check a contractor license in California?

Use CSLB’s Check A License page with the licence number or business name. California licence numbers contain no letters.

Does Texas license general contractors?

TDLR’s search lists specific trades and does not list a general contractor type. Ask your city or county about local registration, and confirm with the relevant agency.

Does TDLR show expired licences?

TDLR labels its search as active licences only, so a missing record may mean expired, not that one never existed. Call TDLR (listed on the page) to check.

Guide only — not an official verification
