CPA license lookup by state.
CPAverify is NASBA’s free public lookup for CPA licences. It is fed by licensing data from state boards of accountancy and shows the licence status in the issuing state.
Important, up front: this is a guide, not a verification service. It links to the official register and never queries it for you. The live record on the official site is the only thing that confirms a licence.
How to check, step by step
- Open CPAverify and search by the CPA’s name or licence number.
- Read the licence status in the issuing state. Disciplinary detail is shown for many states, but coverage varies.
- If the CPA practises in another state, check each state’s record; licensing is state by state.
- For anything that matters (an audit signature, a dispute), confirm directly with the state board of accountancy.
No public check-digit formula exists for these licence numbers, so there is nothing to validate offline: a number that looks right proves nothing until the regulator’s record confirms it.

Why check a licence
Clients and employers check a CPA before engaging them to prepare returns, sign financial statements or give tax advice. A licence is issued by a state, not by NASBA.

Frequently asked questions
Is CPAverify official?
It is NASBA’s public tool and draws on data that state boards of accountancy send to it. NASBA is not the licensing authority; the state board is.
Does CPAverify show disciplinary history?
Many states report it, but coverage varies. Check the state board for the full record.
Can I verify a CPA firm?
This guide covers individual licences. Firm registration is a state-board matter; use the board’s own site.
Guide only — not an official verification
TNAADO is not affiliated with any licensing authority named here. Registers change; confirm on the official site and, for anything binding, with the regulator. This page collects no personal data.
