About this title case converter
Title case capitalizes the important words of a title or headline and leaves short function words in lowercase. Style guides disagree on which words are short, so the converter offers the two most used rule sets.
AP style
Capitalize the first and last word and every word of four letters or more. Keep articles (a, an, the) and conjunctions and prepositions of three letters or fewer (and, but, for, nor, or, so, yet, as, at, by, in, of, off, on, out, per, to, up, via) in lowercase.
Chicago style
Capitalize the first and last word. Keep articles, coordinating conjunctions and prepositions in lowercase whatever their length, so between, through and without stay lowercase. Words that can also be adverbs (up, down, out, over) are capitalized here, because a word list cannot tell the two uses apart.
Other rules applied
- The first word after a colon, question mark, exclamation mark or dash is capitalized, so a subtitle starts with a capital.
- Hyphenated words are treated part by part: state-of-the-art becomes State-of-the-Art.
- Apostrophes stay inside the word: don't becomes Don't.
- Each line is its own title, so you can convert a list of headlines at once.
- Tick “Leave words with capitals inside alone” to protect NASA, iPhone and similar words.
What a tool cannot decide
Style guides also cover proper nouns, phrasal verbs and exceptions that depend on grammar. Treat the output as a fast first pass and check it against your publication's guide. Both guides are subscription publications; the rules above are summarized from them, not quoted.

FAQ: Title case converter
How do I capitalize a title correctly?
Paste it into the box, choose AP or Chicago, and copy the result. The first and last words are capitalized, major words are capitalized, and short articles, conjunctions and prepositions stay lowercase.
What is the difference between AP and Chicago title case?
AP keeps conjunctions and prepositions of three letters or fewer in lowercase and capitalizes longer ones, so With and Between are capitalized. Chicago keeps all prepositions lowercase regardless of length, so with and between stay lowercase.
Should I capitalize every word instead?
Some sites and style guides do, especially for product names and button labels. The main case converter has a Capitalized Each Word mode that capitalizes every word, including short ones.
Does it keep acronyms like NASA?
Tick “Leave words with capitals inside alone” and any word that already contains a capital after its first letter, such as NASA, iPhone or McDonald, is left as typed. Without it, the converter lowercases first, which is right for text typed in ALL CAPS.
Is my text uploaded?
No. The conversion happens in your browser and nothing is sent or stored.
