Ontario licence plate sticker check.

Ontario stopped issuing stickers for most vehicles. Pick your vehicle type to see whether you still need one, and where to check your plate expiry.

Important, up front: ServiceOntario says it no longer issues licence plate stickers for passenger vehicles, light commercial vehicles, motorcycles and mopeds. Heavy commercial and snow vehicles still need them.

Automatic renewal

ServiceOntario says plates for passenger vehicles, light commercial vehicles under 3,000 kg, motorcycles and mopeds renew automatically 90 days before expiration if you have valid insurance and no outstanding fines or tolls, and that you will not receive a sticker or pay a fee. Commercial and business vehicles, motorhomes, vehicles manufactured before 1983, buses and school buses, and snowmobiles are not renewed automatically.

Checking status

For eligible vehicles you can check online whether your plate is currently valid or expired. If you cannot, visit a ServiceOntario centre.
