Repeat suspensions

In Alberta, a second demerit suspension within 1 year is 3 months, and a third or later within 2 years is 6 months; after reinstatement your record carries 7 points (non-GDL) or 3 (GDL) for 2 years. In Ontario, after a suspension and passing the required tests your points are reduced to 7 (full licence) or 4 (novice), and reaching too many points again brings a suspension of another 6 months. In Quebec the minimum revocation is 3 months and can be 6 or 12 months; an individual without a licence in the 4-point bracket loses the right to obtain one for 3, 6 or 12 months depending on points.

Quebec brackets

The SAAQ page sets the brackets above and says that 6D and 8 licence holders with under 5 years’ experience are in the 4-point bracket. It does not publish its per-offence point table on that page, and one excessive-speeding conviction can exceed 30 points. This tool therefore shows Quebec’s bracket, not a warning level.

British Columbia and the other provinces use different systems and are not covered.

Frequently asked questions

How many demerit points before a suspension in Alberta?

On a regular licence, 15 or more points within 2 years means a one-month suspension; on a graduated driver’s licence the limit is 8. Alberta sends a cautionary notice at 8 (regular) or 4 (GDL).

What is the demerit point limit in Quebec?

It depends on your licence and age: 4 for a learner or probationary licence, 8 under 23, 12 at 23 or 24, and 15 at 25 and over.

Is a G2 driver treated differently from a fully licensed driver in Ontario?

Yes. Novice drivers get a warning letter at 2 points, a second at 6, and a 60-day suspension at 9 or more.
