Cross-country ski length

Cross-country ski length depends mostly on weight and on whether you classic ski, skate or tour. Enter your weight, and optionally height, to get a length range in centimetres for each from a retailer chart. Runs in your browser; nothing is sent or stored.

Worked example

A skier who weighs 155 lb and is 5 ft 10 in (70 in). The evo chart row for 150 to 160 lb gives 195 to 210 cm for classic skis, 185 to 195 cm for skate skis and 180 cm for touring skis. The height formulas give a classic ski of 70 x 2.6 + 15 = 197 cm and a skate ski of 70 x 2.6 + 5 = 187 cm, inside the weight-based ranges.

How it works

Two methods from one chart. The evo cross-country ski chart lists a ski length range for each weight band, separately for skating, classic and touring skis. Where two bands share an edge weight (130 lb, for example), the calculator uses the heavier band. The page also gives evo’s height formulas: classic ski length is height in inches x 2.6 + 15, and skate ski length is height in inches x 2.6 + 5, both in centimetres. evo gives backcountry skis as your height plus or minus 2 to 6 inches depending on ability and terrain.

evo suggests shorter lengths for beginner and intermediate skiers, lighter-than-average skiers or quick turns, and longer lengths for aggressive skiing, heavier-than-average skiers, off-trail use or skis with a lot of tip rocker. The chart starts at 100 lb.

FAQ

How long should cross-country skis be?

It depends on weight and style. The evo chart gives, for a 150 to 160 lb skier, 195 to 210 cm for classic, 185 to 195 cm for skate and 180 cm for touring skis.

Are classic skis longer than skate skis?

In the evo chart, yes: classic ranges run 10 cm or more longer than skate ranges for the same weight, and the height formulas differ by 10 cm (+15 for classic, +5 for skate).

What is the cross-country ski length formula?

evo gives height in inches x 2.6 + 15 for classic touring skis and height in inches x 2.6 + 5 for skate skis, both in centimetres.

What length for backcountry or off-trail skis?

evo gives your height plus or minus 2 to 6 inches, depending on ability and how you use them. This calculator does not size backcountry skis.

Which weight do I use at a band edge?

The calculator uses the heavier band when your weight is exactly on a shared edge, such as 130 lb. Check the maker’s chart for your exact ski model.
