How the cost is worked out
For each item: uses per package = package amount ÷ amount per use. Cost per day = price ÷ uses per package × uses per day. Days a package lasts = uses per package ÷ uses per day. Totals add the three daily costs, then multiply by 30.4375 for a month and 365 for a year.
Worked example. Floss: $4 for 5,000 cm (50 m), 45 cm once a day = 111.11 uses, $0.036 a day. Mouthwash: $9 for 500 mL, 20 mL once a day = 25 days a bottle, $0.36 a day. Toothpaste: $5 for 100 g, 1 g twice a day = 50 days a tube, $0.10 a day. Together $0.496 a day, $15.10 a month, $181.04 a year.
What the ADA says. Brush for two minutes twice a day with a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste, and floss once a day to clean between teeth. There are two main types of mouthrinse, cosmetic and therapeutic, and the ADA says children younger than 6 should not use mouthrinse unless directed by a dentist. Use mouthwash as the label directs. The amount per use on a product label is the figure to enter, not the one in the example.
