Quit Smoking and Nicotine Math

Cigarette cost calculator.

Enter how many cigarettes you smoke a day and what a pack costs where you live. The tool turns that into a cost per cigarette, day, week, month and year, then adds up a number of years with an optional yearly price rise. The $15 pack is only a starting example, so replace it with your price. Runs in your browser; nothing is sent or stored.

Not medical advice. This tool does arithmetic on the numbers you enter. Talk to a doctor, pharmacist or quit coach before you change how you quit. In the US you can call 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669); in Canada call 1-866-366-3667 toll-free to talk to a quit coach.

Worked example

10 cigarettes a day at $15 for a pack of 20 is $0.75 each, $7.50 a day, $52.50 a week, $228.13 a month and $2,737.50 a year. Over 20 years at a flat price that is $54,750.00. If the pack price rises 3% a year, the same 20 years comes to $73,557.65.

How it works

cost per cigarette = pack price / cigarettes per pack. Daily = cigarettes per day x cost per cigarette. Weekly = daily x 7. Yearly = daily x 365. Monthly = yearly / 12. The total over N years adds each year's cost, raising the price by the yearly increase you enter; a part-year is counted pro rata.

FAQ

How much does a pack a day cost per year?

At the example price of $15 for 20 cigarettes, a pack a day costs $5,475.00 a year. Your figure depends on your local price.

How do I find my cost per cigarette?

Divide the pack price by the number of cigarettes in it. $15 for 20 is $0.75 each.

Does the lifetime cost include price increases?

Only if you enter a yearly increase. With 0 it holds your current price flat for every year, which usually understates what past or future years cost.

Does it include other costs of smoking?

No. It counts only what you spend on cigarettes. Lighters, health costs and insurance differences are not included.

Where do I find my local pack price?

Look at the price on your last pack or receipt. Prices vary by province, state and store, so this tool uses your number rather than an average.
