Worked example
10 cigarettes a day at $15 a pack of 20 is $2,737.50 a year, or $228.13 a month. Saved for 10 years with no growth that is $27,375.00. At a 5% yearly return, compounded monthly, it would be $35,423.77, of which $8,048.77 is growth. The 5% is only a placeholder.
How it works
monthly amount = cigarettes per day x (pack price / pack size) x 365 / 12, deposited at the end of each month. Balance = monthly x ((1 + r)^n - 1) / r with r = yearly return / 12 and n = years x 12; at 0% the balance is simply the sum of the deposits. It ignores tax, fees, inflation and changes in price, and returns are not guaranteed. It is arithmetic for illustration, not financial advice.
