Worked example
14 mL of e-liquid a week from $20 for a 30 mL bottle costs $9.33 a week, $486.99 a year. At 12 mg/mL that is 2.0 mL a day and 24.0 mg of nicotine a day (2 mL x 12). With pods: 7 one-mL pods a week at $6 and a label strength of 5% (50 mg/mL) is $2,191.46 a year and 50 mg of nicotine a day.
How it works
nicotine mg per day = mL used per day x strength in mg/mL. A strength shown in % converts as % x 10 = mg/mL, because 1% is 1 gram in 100 mL, which is 10 mg per mL. E-liquid cost per week = mL per week x (bottle price / bottle mL); pod cost per week = pods x price per pod, and mL per week = pods x mL per pod. Yearly = weekly x 52.1775 + monthly extras x 12. Whether a device wastes or loses liquid is not modeled, so mg per day is the nicotine in the liquid you go through, not a measure of what you absorb.

FAQ
How much does vaping cost per year?
It depends on your own use and prices. The example, 14 mL a week from $20 for a 30 mL bottle, comes to $486.99 a year.
How do I turn mg/mL into mg per day?
Multiply the mL you use in a day by the mg/mL on the label. 2 mL a day at 12 mg/mL is 24 mg a day.
How do I convert nicotine percent to mg/mL?
Multiply the percent by 10. 5% is 50 mg/mL and 2% is 20 mg/mL.
What is the legal maximum strength?
Health Canada says every legal vaping product in Canada has a maximum nicotine concentration of 20 mg/mL. Rules elsewhere differ.
Does this compare vaping with cigarettes?
Not on this page. For a cost comparison across products, see the cigarette vs vape vs pouch cost calculator. It does not say anything about health.
