How the cost is worked out

Cost per shade = box price ÷ shades one box gained. Cost per day = box price ÷ days in a box. Boxes needed = target shades ÷ shades per box, rounded up, and the total is boxes × price. This assumes every box gains the same number of shades, which may not hold in practice.

Worked example. A $45 box with 14 days of strips gained 3 shades. Cost per shade: $15.00. Cost per day: $3.21. To gain 6 shades you need 2 boxes, $90.00, over 28 treatment days. For 7 shades you need 3 boxes, $135.00, because a part box is still a box.

What the ADA says. Over-the-counter strips use a lower concentration of bleaching agent than a dentist would, and the ADA suggests discussing options with your dentist and looking for a product with the ADA Seal of Acceptance. Whitening does not work on caps, veneers, crowns or fillings, yellow teeth will probably bleach well, brown teeth may not respond as well, and teeth with gray tones may not bleach at all. Follow the label for how long and how often to use a product.

FAQ

How do I work out the cost per shade of whitening strips?

Divide the box price by the number of shades the box lightened your teeth. The shade count comes from comparing your teeth with a shade guide before and after.

How many shades do whitening strips lighten?

It varies by person, product and the cause of the stain, so no single figure applies. Measure your own result and enter it, as the calculator asks.

Will whitening strips work on crowns or fillings?

No. The ADA says whitening will not work on caps, veneers, crowns or fillings, so they stay their original shade while natural teeth lighten.

Should I talk to a dentist before whitening?

Yes. The ADA suggests discussing whitening with your dentist before starting, since whiteners may not correct all types of discoloration.

How many boxes will I need?

Divide the shades you want by the shades one box gives, and round up. This assumes each box gives the same result, which may not hold, so treat it as a minimum.
