Worked example

25 purchases a week at an average round-up of $0.50 saves $12.50 a week, $54.35 a month and $652.22 a year. Over 5 years with no interest that is $3,261.09. With a 2x multiplier the weekly amount doubles to $25.00. At 4% a year compounded monthly the 1x plan reaches $3,603.45 after 5 years, of which $342.36 is interest.

How it works

saved per week = purchases per week x average round-up x multiplier. Per year = per week x 52.1775. Per month = per year / 12. Balance = monthly amount x ((1 + r)^n - 1) / r, with r = annual rate / 12 and n = years x 12; with no interest it is simply the sum of the deposits.

The tool does not connect to a bank and does not know which purchases your app rounds up. It also does not know of any particular app's fees or limits.

Sources and basis (opened 2026-10-08): arithmetic on the numbers you enter. No prices, rates or national averages are assumed. The $0.50 starting average is the mean of rounding 1 to 99 cents up to the next dollar, which is arithmetic, not a published statistic.

FAQ

How much can I save by rounding up purchases?

25 purchases a week at an average round-up of $0.50 saves $652.22 a year. Your figure depends on how many purchases you make and your actual cents.

What is the average round-up per purchase?

If the cents on your purchases were evenly spread, rounding up to the next dollar would average about $0.50. Real spending is not perfectly even, so use your own average if you have it.

What does the multiplier do?

It multiplies each round-up. A 2x multiplier saves twice the spare change on every purchase.

Does it include interest?

Only if you enter a rate. At 4% compounded monthly for 5 years the interest is $342.36 on the 1x plan.

Do I get anything if the purchase is already a whole dollar?

In this tool the average round-up is whatever you enter, so allow for it by lowering the figure. How a bank treats whole-dollar purchases varies by app.
