Worked example

Seven days, two drop-in visits a day at $25, two pets with a $5 fee for the second: each visit is 25 + 5 = $30, so 14 visits x $30 = $420, or $60 a day. With a 25% surcharge on 1 holiday day, add 420 / 7 x 1 x 25% = $15, for $435. At 13% tax the client pays $491.55; if the sitter’s booking app keeps 20% of the $435, the sitter receives $348.

How it works

Per drop-in visit: visit rate + extra-pet fee for each pet after the first + travel fee, multiplied by days x visits per day. Per overnight: night rate + extra-pet fee for each extra pet, multiplied by nights. A holiday surcharge is applied to the average daily cost for the holiday days. Tax is added to the client’s total, and a platform fee comes off the sitter’s share (it is not added to the client’s price).

This tool does not know what rates are normal where you live. To set a rate, look at what local sitters and walkers charge for the same visit length and service, and add what you need to cover travel time, insurance and cancellations. Sitters who work for themselves can owe tax on the income, and some jurisdictions require business licences for pet services: check local rules.

FAQ

How much should I charge for pet sitting?

It depends on where you live, the visit length and the service. Check what local sitters charge for the same service, then use this calculator to total your own visit, overnight, extra-pet and holiday rates.

How do you charge for extra pets?

Most sitters charge a flat fee for each pet after the first, per visit or per night. Enter it as the extra-pet fee.

Should I charge more on holidays?

Many sitters add a holiday surcharge, often a percentage of the daily rate. Enter the number of holiday days and the percentage.

How do booking-app fees work?

Most platforms take a percentage of the sitter’s earnings. Enter it as the platform fee to see what the sitter takes home. It does not change the client’s total.

Do I need to charge tax on pet sitting?

It depends on your location and income. Enter the tax rate that applies to you, or 0 if none, and check local rules.
