How to estimate what movers will cost
Hired movers are usually billed by the hour: crew rate x billable hours, plus any flat travel fee, extra charges and a tip. This calculator does that arithmetic from the numbers on your quote. It contains no market rates: movers' prices differ by city, season and company, so type your own.
Worked example 1. 2 movers at 50.00 per mover per hour plus a 30.00 per hour truck charge is a crew rate of 130.00 per hour. The job takes 2 hours but the minimum is 3, so 3 hours are billed: 390.00. Add an 80.00 travel fee for 470.00, then a 10% tip on labour and extras (39.00) for a total of 509.00, or 169.67 per billed hour.
Worked example 2. 3 movers at 45.00, no minimum, 6 hours, and 60.00 of extras for stairs: 3 x 45 x 6 = 810.00, plus 60.00 = 870.00.
Getting the hours right. Ask whether the clock includes travel between the two homes. Get at least two written quotes, and check what the minimum, fuel charge and cancellation terms are before booking.
Frequently asked questions
How many hours will my move take?
It depends on the amount of belongings, stairs, distance and crew size. Ask each mover for an estimate based on your inventory; this tool prices whatever hours you enter.
Can I enter one crew rate instead of a rate per mover?
Yes. Leave the per-mover rate blank, set the number of movers for the record, and put the crew rate in the truck or crew charge per hour box. The calculator is for hourly quotes; a flat-price quote needs no maths.
Is the tip included in the quote?
Not here. The tip box is optional and applies to labour and extras, not the flat fee. Set it to blank for none.
Does it add tax?
No. Add sales tax or GST/HST to the total if your quote is before tax.
