How five-pin scoring works

In Canadian five-pin bowling the five pins are worth 2, 3, 5, 3 and 2 points, 15 in all. A strike (all five pins on the first ball) is 15 points plus the pins from your next two balls. A spare (all remaining pins on the second ball) is 15 points plus the pins from your next ball. Two strikes in a row make a double, worth 30 plus the first ball of the next frame, and three in a row make a triple, worth 45 in the first strike's frame. A perfect game is twelve strikes in a row, 450. Each foul takes 15 points off the game total.

In the 10th frame a strike earns two more balls and a spare earns one more. Those extra balls only add their own pins.

For league handicap, the C5PBA describes a system of 80% of the difference between the bowler's average and a base figure of 225. A 175 average gives 0.80 × (225 − 175) = 40 pins. The rules leave the percentage and base to the league, do not set a rounding method, and do not cover averages above 225. This tool shows the exact figure, a rounded-down whole number, and 0 when the average is above the base. Fractions of an average are dropped before the calculation, as the rules require for handicapping.

The score sheet takes pin points rather than individual pins, so it cannot tell which pins a second ball left standing. It rejects totals no pins can make (1 and 14) and anything over 15 in a frame.
