FPS to frame time.

Frame time is how long each frame lasts: 1000 divided by frames per second, in milliseconds. Enter FPS to get ms per frame, or enter ms to get FPS, and check how much of a frame budget a task uses. Runs in your browser; nothing is sent or stored.

Inputs

FPS if converting from FPS, milliseconds if converting from frame time.

FPS
ms

Optional. Shows how much of the target frame it uses up.

Result

Fill the form and press Calculate.

Worked example

At 60 FPS each frame lasts 1000 / 60 = 16.67 ms. At 144 FPS it is 1000 / 144 = 6.94 ms. Going the other way, an 8 ms frame is 1000 / 8 = 125 FPS. If a task takes 10 ms and your target is 60 FPS, it uses 60% of the 16.67 ms budget.

How it works

Frame time (ms) = 1000 / FPS and FPS = 1000 / frame time (ms), because there are 1,000 milliseconds in a second. Doubling the frame rate halves the frame time, so going from 30 to 60 FPS saves about 16.7 ms per frame while going from 240 to 360 saves only about 1.4 ms.

Frame time is not the same as average FPS: a game can average 60 FPS and still look choppy when individual frames take much longer than others. The Frame rate - Wikipedia article notes that frame time is related to frame rate but measures the time between frames, and that reviews sometimes report the worst 1% of frame rates to describe choppiness. The Refresh rate - Wikipedia article lists approximately 6.9 ms of frame persistence at 144 Hz and 16.7 ms at 60 Hz, which matches this calculator.

FAQ

How do I convert FPS to milliseconds?

Divide 1000 by the frame rate. 60 FPS is 16.67 ms per frame, 120 FPS is 8.33 ms, 144 FPS is 6.94 ms and 240 FPS is 4.17 ms.

How do I convert frame time to FPS?

Divide 1000 by the frame time in milliseconds. A 10 ms frame is 100 FPS and a 16.67 ms frame is 60 FPS.

What is a good frame time?

Lower is smoother, and steady is better than low on average. A steady 16.67 ms is 60 FPS and a steady 6.94 ms is 144 FPS. Spikes well above your average frame time are what you notice as stutter.

Why does going from 240 to 360 FPS help less than 60 to 120?

Frame time shrinks by a fraction, not by a fixed step. 60 to 120 FPS saves 8.33 ms per frame, while 240 to 360 FPS saves about 1.39 ms.

Is frame time the same as input lag?

No. Frame time is how long each frame takes to produce. Input lag also includes your input device, the game, the display and any buffering, so it is a different measurement.
