How the weighted grade is calculated

Each category counts toward your final grade in proportion to its weight. The tool multiplies your score in each category by that category's weight, adds those up, then divides by the total weight — the standard weighted-average (weighted arithmetic mean) formula used anywhere a syllabus assigns different importance to different types of work:

Final grade = ∑(weight₁ × score₁) ÷ ∑(weight₁)

Dividing by the total weight (rather than assuming it's always exactly 100) means the result stays correct even if your weights add up to something other than 100% — the tool will flag that so you can double-check it against your syllabus.

Letter grade scale used

Standard 10-point letter grade scale
PercentageLetter grade
90–100%A
80–89%B
70–79%C
60–69%D
Below 60%F

Grading scales are set by individual institutions and vary — if your school uses a different scale (for example Ontario's Growing Success achievement levels), convert your final percentage on this site's grade-percentage-to-letter tool instead of assuming the 10-point scale above.

Sources, and when they were checked

Checked on 29 September 2026. This is not a made-up shortcut — it's the standard weighted arithmetic mean, the same formula used any time a course syllabus lists category weights.
