How the conversion works
Every amount is converted through the US dollar. The tool stores one indicative rate per currency against USD, divides your amount by the rate of the currency you are leaving to get US dollars, then multiplies by the rate of the currency you are going to. The rates in this tool are a fixed reference table set in May 2026 (CAD 1.36, EUR 0.92, GBP 0.79, AUD 1.51, JPY 152, CHF 0.90, CNY 7.21, INR 83.5 and MXN 17.0 per US dollar). They are not a live feed, so they will drift from the market over time.
That makes this page good for rough planning, such as sizing a travel budget or sanity-checking a quote, and poor for anything where the exact rate matters. A bank, card network or exchange adds its own margin to the mid-market rate, so the amount you actually receive is lower than a mid-market conversion. For settlement dates or invoices, use the rate published by the Bank of Canada for that day or the rate on your payment confirmation.
Worked example
Convert 1,000 Canadian dollars to euros. Step 1: 1,000 CAD ÷ 1.36 = 735.29 USD. Step 2: 735.29 USD × 0.92 = 676.47 EUR. The implied CAD to EUR rate is 0.92 ÷ 1.36 = 0.6765, and the inverse is about 1.4783 CAD per EUR. The same 1,000 CAD is 580.88 GBP at the table's rate of 0.79.
Frequently asked questions
Are these live exchange rates?
No. The tool uses a fixed reference table last set in May 2026. For the current market rate, check the Bank of Canada daily exchange rates or your bank.
Why is the amount I receive lower than the converted amount?
Banks, card issuers and exchange counters apply a margin or fee on top of the mid-market rate, so the amount you actually receive is lower than a straight conversion.
Which currencies can I convert?
US dollar, Canadian dollar, euro, British pound, Australian dollar, Japanese yen, Swiss franc, Chinese yuan, Indian rupee and Mexican peso.
How is a cross rate such as CAD to EUR worked out?
Both currencies are quoted against the US dollar, so the CAD to EUR rate is the EUR rate divided by the CAD rate (0.92 ÷ 1.36 = 0.6765).
Where can I find the official rate for a specific date?
The Bank of Canada publishes daily exchange rates and a downloadable history, and the European Central Bank publishes euro reference rates.
