Small claims court limit by province.
Every province and territory sets its own small claims monetary limit and its own filing fees. There is no single Canadian figure — and several changed recently.
Alberta is highest at $100,000. Quebec is lowest at $15,000. Ontario jumped from $35,000 to $50,000 on 1 October 2025 — a change several older sources online still miss.

$50,000, as of 1 October 2025 — up from $35,000. Many pages online still cite the old $35,000 figure.
Which province has the highest small claims limit?
Alberta, at $100,000 — raised from $50,000 on 1 August 2023. Saskatchewan is next at $50,000.
Which province has the lowest small claims limit?
Quebec, at $15,000, unchanged since 1 January 2015. Claims above that amount can still be brought in Quebec's Small Claims Division if you formally abandon the excess — but you permanently give up the right to collect it.
Is British Columbia's limit $5,000 or $35,000?
Both apply, to different amounts. BC's Civil Resolution Tribunal (an online tribunal, not a courtroom) handles most claims up to $5,000. Provincial Court Small Claims handles claims from $5,001 up to $35,000.
