How the apparel and shoes return fee works

For apparel and shoes, Amazon applies a returns processing fee to each customer-returned unit. No thresholds apply, and fees are charged as returns are made. The rate depends on the size tier and the shipping weight, which for large standard-size units is the greater of unit weight and dimensional weight.

Amazon’s own example: a T-shirt measuring 13 × 9 × 0.85 inches with a 5.40 oz unit weight has an 11.45 oz dimensional weight, falls in the 8+ to 12 oz band and is charged $2.19 per returned unit. Those are the values loaded above.

FAQ

Is there a return-rate threshold for apparel?

No. Amazon says apparel and shoes are charged for each returned unit, with no thresholds, and fees are charged as returns are made.

How is shipping weight set for a T-shirt?

Amazon uses the greater of unit weight and dimensional weight for large standard-size units. Dimensional weight is length × width × height divided by 139. Small standard-size units use unit weight.

Are returns fees the same as the FBA fulfillment fee?

No. The returns processing fee is a separate charge on returned units, and it has its own rate card. Apparel also has its own fulfillment rate card.

Does Amazon refund the fee if the item is resold?

Amazon’s page does not describe any refund of the returns processing fee, so this calculator treats it as a cost on every returned unit.
