Amazon FBA returns

Returns processing fee, net of unsellable units.

Enter a month’s shipped and returned units. The calculator applies your category’s return-rate threshold and the per-unit rate for your size tier and weight.

Fee = (returned units − threshold % × shipped units) × the per-unit rate for the size tier and shipping weight. Products that shipped fewer than 25 units in the month are exempt. Apparel and shoes work differently: use the apparel returns fee calculator.

How the returns processing fee works

Amazon charges the returns processing fee on products outside apparel and shoes whose return rate is above a threshold set for each product’s fee category. A product’s return rate is the percentage of a month’s shipped units that are physically returned during that month and the next two calendar months. The fee is charged per returned unit above the threshold, at a rate set by size tier and shipping weight, and posts between the 7th and 15th day of the third month after the shipment month. Products that shipped fewer than 25 units in the month are exempt. Enrolled FBA New Selection products do not pay the fee on the first 20 units of each eligible parent ASIN.

Worked example from Amazon’s page: 1,000 units shipped in June and 120 returned by August with a 10% threshold means 100 returns are free and 20 units are charged. Amazon labels that 10% as illustrative, so no category matches it. With the 8.1% Home and Kitchen threshold loaded above, 81 returns are free and 39 are charged at $3.39 each, which is $132.21.

Net-of-unsellable view: the optional fields add the landed cost of returned units that cannot be resold, so you see the fee and the inventory loss together. That part is your own assumption, not an Amazon figure.

FAQ

When does Amazon charge the FBA returns processing fee?

On products other than apparel and shoes whose return rate is above a threshold specific to the product’s fee category. The fee applies to each returned unit above the threshold, using the rate for the product’s size tier and shipping weight.

Is there a minimum number of units?

Yes. Amazon says a product is exempt from the fee if it shipped fewer than 25 units in a month.

When is the fee charged?

For a given month’s returns, Amazon charges it between the 7th and 15th day of the third subsequent month. Units shipped in June, for example, are charged between September 7 and 15.

Does this include the 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge?

No. Amazon’s fulfillment-fee page applies the 3.5% surcharge to fulfillment fees. The returns processing fee page does not mention it, so this calculator does not add it. Check your statement.

Does the FBA New Selection program waive the fee?

Amazon says the fee does not apply to the first 20 units of each eligible parent ASIN, and returned items must be received at a fulfillment center within 180 days of the first inventory-received date. Enter the free returns you have left to model it.
