United States · Insurance Licensing

Insurance license lookup by state.

Pick a state to reach its official producer search, learn what the search asks for, and see how an NPN fits in. No data leaves your browser.

Short answer: insurance licenses are issued by each state, so the public check is the state's own lookup. NIPR holds a national database, but access is restricted, and its NPN lookup asks for personal identifiers you should type only on nipr.com.

Find your state's lookup

Optional: shape-check an NPN

Runs in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere. NIPR publishes no length or check-digit rule for an NPN, so this only checks the shape; it cannot tell you the NPN exists.

State lookup or NIPR?

Licenses are issued by each state's department of insurance. NIPR's Producer Database (PDB) gathers licensing data from all 50 states, DC, Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, but NIPR says PDB data is subject to the Fair Credit Reporting Act and available only to entities with a permissible purpose. Individual producers get one free report a year. For a quick consumer check, the state lookup is the route. See the NIPR guide.

Frequently asked questions

How do I do an insurance license lookup by state?

Each state's department of insurance licenses producers, so the public lookup is run by the state or by a platform it uses (such as the NAIC State Based Systems lookup or Sircon). Pick the state below and open its official lookup.

What is an NPN lookup?

An NPN is a National Producer Number, a unique identifier NIPR describes as separate from any state license number. NIPR's NPN lookup asks for an individual SSN, a license number or an agency FEIN, so only enter those on nipr.com.

Is there one national public search for every insurance agent?

NIPR's Producer Database holds licensing data from all 50 states, DC and several territories, but access to it is restricted under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Individual producers can run their own report, so consumers are pointed to state lookups.

Does this page confirm a license?

No. It links to official pages and shape-checks a number you type. Only the state or NIPR can show a license status.

A guide, not a verification

TNAADO is not a regulator and this page does not check anyone's license or imply official verification. It links to the official sources, which control. Do not type a Social Security Number into this page. Check the department's site for current details.
