Before you search

Ohio Department of Insurance (ODI) licenses insurance producers in Ohio. Per the department, the public check is business entity name, last or first name, license number, National Producer number, city, zip, residency and license type (at least one of last name, NPN, city or zip is required). Have the agent's full name and, if you can get it, their OH license number ready. Ask the agent for their NPN too: it is a nationwide identifier, separate from any state license number, and many lookups accept it.

Optional: shape-check an NPN

Runs in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere. NIPR publishes no length or check-digit rule for an NPN, so this only checks the shape; it cannot tell you the NPN exists.

What the OH search offers

Ohio Department of Insurance (ODI) directs you to business entity name, last or first name, license number, National Producer number, city, zip, residency and license type (at least one of last name, NPN, city or zip is required). It describes the result as agents and agencies, with an Active Licenses Only filter.

The locator lets you filter by residency (resident or non-resident), by license type and by "Active Licenses Only".

License types it lists include the major lines (health, life, personal lines, property and casualty, variable products) and limited lines such as car rental, credit, crop, funeral expense, self service storage, travel, surety, bail bond, title and others.

Notice on the locator page: a new self-service Agent Portal app goes live on October 1, 2026. The current locator "will remain available as is through January 20, 2027". After that date, printing a license or viewing a CE transcript will only be available in the Agent Portal. Check ODI for what happens to public lookups after that date.

What a license lookup does not cover

A lookup shows a license record. It does not prove an agent is the right fit, that a policy is genuine, or that the person in front of you is the licensee. Ask the agent for their license number, compare it to the record and check the name. Insurance licenses are issued by each state's department of insurance, and a producer can hold licenses in many states under one NPN.

Frequently asked questions

How do I look up an Ohio insurance agent license?

Open the official ODI Agent/Agency Locator for Ohio from this page. Ohio Department of Insurance (ODI) says to use business entity name, last or first name, license number, National Producer number, city, zip, residency and license type (at least one of last name, NPN, city or zip is required). Results come from the department's own system, not from this page.

Can I search by NPN in Ohio?

Yes. The locator has a National Producer # field. It requires at least one of last name, National Producer #, city or zip.

Does the Ohio lookup show complaints or discipline?

The locator page does not say it includes complaints or discipline. Check ODI's consumer pages for that.

Does this page verify a Ohio license?

No. It links to Ohio Department of Insurance (ODI) and explains the search. Only the official lookup can show a license status, and NIPR notes that updates can take 24 to 48 hours to reach its data after a state issues or renews a license.

A guide, not a verification

TNAADO is not a regulator and this page does not check anyone's license or imply official verification. It links to the official sources, which control. Do not type a Social Security Number into this page. Check the department's site for current details.
