Text Tools
Add line numbers.
Paste text and put a number in front of every line. Choose where numbering starts, how much it steps by, what goes between the number and the text, and whether blank lines are numbered. Or strip numbers that are already there.

Paste text to number its lines.
About this line numbering tool
Each line gets a number in front of it, using the start value and step you set. Windows, Mac and Unix line endings are all handled, and the output uses plain line feeds.
Worked example
first line
second line
third line
Starting at 1 with the period separator, the result is 1. first line, 2. second line, 3. , 4. third line. Untick Number blank lines too and the empty line is left empty and the third line becomes 3. third line.
Options
- Start and step: whole numbers only. Start at 0 for zero-based numbering, use a step of 10 for BASIC-style line numbers (10, 20, 30), or a negative step to count down.
- Align numbers: pads with spaces on the left so 9 and 10 line up in a monospaced font.
- Remove existing numbers: strips a leading number followed by a period, bracket, colon, dash, pipe, tab or space. Lines that do not start with a number are left alone, and a line that begins with a real number you wanted to keep (a year, for example) will lose it, so check the result.
Limits
Numbers are plain text, not a live list, so editing the text later does not renumber it; run it again. Input is limited to 5 MB and stays on your device.
FAQ
How do I add line numbers to text?
Paste the text, leave the action on "Add line numbers" and copy the result. Each line now starts with its number.
Can I start numbering at 0 or count in tens?
Yes. Set "Start at" to 0, or set Step to 10 to get 10, 20, 30 and so on.
How do I remove line numbers from text?
Switch Action to "Remove existing line numbers". A leading number and its separator are stripped from every line.
