About this alphabetical sorter

Each line is one item. The tool compares lines using the browser's English collation (Intl.Collator), so accented letters sort next to their base letter: eagle, éclair, zebra, not éclair last.

Worked example

pear
Apple
banana
item10
item2
item1

Alphabetical A to Z with ignore case gives Apple, banana, item1, item10, item2, pear: "item10" comes before "item2" because the character 1 sorts before 2. Switch Sort type to Natural and the digits are read as numbers: item1, item2, item10.

Options

Limits

Order follows English rules. Other languages sort some letters differently (for example Swedish places å after z), which this tool does not model. Input is limited to 5 MB and never leaves your device.

FAQ

How do I sort a list alphabetically?

Paste the list with one item per line. The sorted list appears immediately in A to Z order. Choose Z to A for reverse order, then use Copy result.

Why does item10 come before item2?

Plain alphabetical order compares one character at a time, and 1 sorts before 2. Set Sort type to Natural to read digit runs as numbers so item2 comes before item10.

Can it sort names by last name?

Not directly. Put the last name first on each line (for example "Smith, Jane") and sort those lines. The tool sorts whole lines, not fields.
