Study permit eligibility, checked.

IRCC weighs five requirements for a study permit: a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) acceptance, enough money, a clean criminal record, being medically fit, and satisfying an officer you'll leave Canada when the permit ends. Check the first four here and get the current financial figure for your situation.

Beyond tuition and travel, a single applicant must show $23,448 in living-expense funds for applications from 1 September 2026 onward — plus $6,318 for each additional family member.

What IRCC actually requires

IRCC's own eligibility page lists five conditions you must meet together: be enrolled at a DLI; prove you have enough money to pay tuition, living expenses for yourself and any family members who come with you, and return transportation; obey the law, have no criminal record, and get a police certificate if asked; be in good health and get a medical exam if required; and prove to an officer that you will leave Canada when your study permit expires.

The financial figure this tool computes is the living-expenses floor only — the amount published on top of whatever your actual tuition and transportation cost. Two rates are currently in effect: applications submitted 1 January 2025 to 31 August 2026 use $22,895 (single applicant) plus $6,170 per additional family member; applications submitted 1 September 2026 onward use the higher current rate, $23,448 plus $6,318 per additional family member. This tool uses the current rate.

Frequently asked questions

Does the financial requirement include tuition?

No — the $23,448 (or $22,895 under the older rate) figure is living expenses only. IRCC separately requires you to show your actual first-year tuition fee (from your acceptance letter) and return transportation costs, on top of that floor. This tool adds all three for you.

Do I always need a police certificate or medical exam?

Not always — IRCC requires them only when asked, based on factors like your country of residence and how long you've been there, or your intended program and how long you'll stay. Everyone must still be admissible either way; the certificate or exam is how you prove it when required.

Does this account for Quebec's different financial threshold?

No. Quebec applicants (CAQ holders) are assessed against a separate, Quebec-specific financial threshold that this tool does not model. Check the CAQ requirements directly if you're studying in Quebec.

Not an IRCC eligibility determination

This tool checks the requirements you can self-assess and computes IRCC's published financial floor — it cannot assess "intent to leave Canada," which is a discretionary judgment made by a visa officer based on your full application, ties to your home country and program choice. Meeting every item here does not guarantee approval. Confirm current requirements at canada.ca before applying.
