How to add hours and minutes

Convert every entry to minutes, add or subtract them, then turn the total back into hours and minutes. There are 60 minutes in an hour, so the minutes part of an h:mm total is always 0 to 59 and any extra rolls into the hours. The decimal figure is total minutes divided by 60.

Worked example. 2:45 plus 1h 30m minus 0:20 is 165 + 90 - 20 = 235 minutes. That is 3:55, or 3.92 decimal hours (235 / 60 = 3.9167).

Accepted formats. h:mm (2:45), hours and minutes (1h 30m), minutes alone (90m) or decimal hours (1.5h). A bare number such as 90 is rejected because it could mean hours or minutes. Fractions of a minute are rounded to the nearest minute. A total over 24 hours is also shown as days and h:mm.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add hours and minutes together?

Add the hours, add the minutes, then carry every 60 minutes into one hour. For example 2:45 + 1:30 is 3 hours and 75 minutes, which is 4:15.

How do I subtract time in hours and minutes?

Choose Subtract on a row. The calculator works in minutes, so 5:00 minus 0:20 is 300 - 20 = 280 minutes, which is 4:40.

Why does 90 not work on its own?

A bare 90 could be 90 hours or 90 minutes. Write 90m, 1:30 or 1.5h so the result is not a guess.

Can the total go over 24 hours?

Yes. Totals are not wrapped at 24 hours. A total of 30:00 is also shown as 1 d 6:00.
