How elapsed time is calculated
Elapsed time is end minus start, measured in minutes. When the end clock time is earlier than the start and no dates are given, 24 hours (1,440 minutes) is added, so a shift that runs past midnight comes out right. With both dates filled in, the whole days between them are added instead.
Worked example. From 22:15 to 06:40: 06:40 is 400 minutes after midnight and 22:15 is 1,335, so 400 - 1,335 + 1,440 = 505 minutes, which is 8:25 or 8.42 decimal hours. With dates, 2026-03-01 09:00 to 2026-03-03 17:30 is 2 days and 8:30, so 56:30 in total (3,390 minutes).
Clock changes. The tool counts wall-clock minutes and ignores daylight saving changes. On the day clocks move, the real elapsed time can be an hour more or less. See the daylight saving dates page for when that happens. The same start and end time gives 0:00, not 24 hours.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the time between two times?
Subtract the start from the end in minutes, then convert to hours and minutes. From 9:00 to 17:30 is 510 minutes, which is 8:30.
How do I calculate time that passes midnight?
If the end is earlier than the start, add 24 hours to the end. From 22:15 to 06:40 is 8:25.
What if the start and end time are the same?
The result is 0:00. To count a full 24 hours, fill in a start date and an end date one day apart.
Does it account for daylight saving time?
No. It counts wall-clock time only. On a day clocks change, the real elapsed time can differ by an hour.

Arithmetic only
Plain wall-clock arithmetic. It does not model time zones or daylight saving changes.
