Austrian Sozialversicherungsnummer validator.

Check a 10-digit Austrian Sozialversicherungsnummer (Versicherungsnummer, VSNR): serial, check digit and date part. Format and checksum only.

How it works: the layout is LLLP TTMMJJ: a three-digit serial from 100, a check digit P, and the date. Multiply the serial digits by 3, 7, 9 and the six date digits by 5, 8, 4, 2, 1, 6, add them, and the remainder after dividing by 11 is P. A remainder of 10 is never issued.

How the Versicherungsnummer is built

A written answer by the Austrian federal government to Parliament (4690/AB XXIII. GP) describes the Versicherungsnummer as purely numeric and ten digits long, laid out LLL P TT MM JJ.

Layout and weights, per the parliamentary answer
PartDigitsWeights
LLL serial number (starts at 100)1–33, 7, 9
P check digit4(result)
TT MM JJ day, month, year5–105, 8, 4, 2, 1, 6

Check digit: P is the remainder of the weighted sum divided by 11. If the remainder is 10, the answer says the next higher serial number is used, so a 10 is never stored. Worked example: 1237 010180 gives 1×3 + 2×7 + 3×9 + 0×5 + 1×8 + 0×4 + 1×2 + 8×1 + 0×6 = 62, and 62 mod 11 = 7, which is the fourth digit. By contrast 2237 010180 gives 65, remainder 10, so no such number exists. (Both examples are the python-stdnum doctests.)

The date part

Usually the last six digits show the date of birth, but the same source notes that a birth date may later change, and that a month of 13, 14 or 15 marks a fictitious date used when the exact date is unknown. This tool therefore verifies the arithmetic and only describes the date part; it does not reject on it, and the year has two digits so no century is given.

Format and checksum only — not a registry lookup

A passing result does not prove the number was issued to anyone.

Austrian Sozialversicherungsnummer FAQ

How do I check an Austrian social security number?

Multiply the first three digits by 3, 7, 9 and the last six by 5, 8, 4, 2, 1, 6, add the products, and divide by 11. The remainder must equal the fourth digit.

Does the Austrian number always contain the birth date?

Usually the last six digits show the date of birth, but they can differ from the real date, and months 13 to 15 mark fictitious dates, so this tool does not reject a number for its date part.

Is this the same as a German Rentenversicherungsnummer?

No. The German pension insurance number has 12 characters and a different layout. This tool is for the Austrian ten-digit number only.

Official register

To confirm a number is real, use the official source: Austrian social insurance (sozialversicherung.at). Only the social insurance institutions can confirm a number was issued; this page does not contact them.
