EMŠO validator.
Check whether a Slovenian EMŠO (enotna matična številka občana) has 13 digits, a real birth date and the correct modulus 11 check digit. It checks format and check digit only. Everything runs in your browser.
How it works: multiply the first 12 digits by 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, add them and divide by 11. Subtract the remainder from 11 to get the check digit. Remainder 0 gives 0; remainder 1 cannot be used, so no valid EMŠO looks like that.

How the EMŠO check digit works
The EMŠO is Slovenia's 13-digit personal identification number. Articles 3 and 4 of the national decree on determining the personal identification number set out its structure and check digit.
| Digits | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 1 to 7 | Date of birth: two-digit day, two-digit month, three-digit year |
| 8 to 9 | Register code, set at 50 by the decree |
| 10 to 12 | Sequence number: 000 to 499 for men, 500 to 999 for women |
| 13 | Check digit |
Article 4: multiply the 12 digits by the weights 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, add the products, divide by 11 using whole numbers and subtract the remainder from 11. A remainder of 0 gives check digit 0. A remainder of 1 gives a two-digit result, so the registrar skips that sequence number.
Worked example with a constructed number: 0101990500003. The weighted sum is 85, which leaves remainder 8 when divided by 11, so the check digit is 11 minus 8, which is 3. The number is built for illustration and is not a real person's.
How the three-digit year is read
The decree gives the year as three digits. This tool reads 000 to 799 as 2000 to 2799 and 800 to 999 as 1800 to 1999, which fits all living people. That century rule is a convention of this tool, not text from the decree. The tool does not reject a register code other than 50; it just mentions it.
Checks format and check digit only
A passing result means the digits are consistent with the decree. It cannot confirm the EMŠO was issued by the central population register or who holds it. This page does not query any register.

Frequently asked questions
What is an EMŠO?
The EMŠO (enotna matična številka občana) is the 13-digit personal identification number used in Slovenia. It encodes the birth date, a register code, a sex-linked sequence number and a check digit.
How is the EMŠO check digit calculated?
Multiply the first 12 digits by 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 repeated twice, add them, divide by 11 and subtract the remainder from 11. A remainder of 0 gives 0.
Why does an EMŠO never come out with a remainder of 1?
A remainder of 1 would make the check number two digits long, so the registrar skips that sequence number and issues the next one.
Does a valid result mean the EMŠO is real?
No. It only means the digits are internally consistent. Only the Slovenian population register can confirm an EMŠO was issued.
Is the number I type sent anywhere?
No. The check runs in your browser and nothing is transmitted, stored or logged.
Checksum only, not a lookup
This tool checks the number's format and check digit entirely in your browser. A valid result does not prove the number was issued or belongs to anyone, and it does not query any official register. Nothing you type is transmitted or stored.
