Austrian SV-Nummer validator.

Check an Austrian Versicherungsnummer (SV-Nummer) against the check digit the social insurance system publishes, and read the birth-date field.

How it works: the number is LLL P TT MM JJ. Multiply the three serial digits by 3, 7, 9 and the six date digits by 5, 8, 4, 2, 1, 6, add them, and take the remainder after dividing by 11. That remainder is the 4th digit (P). A remainder of 10 is never issued.

How the Austrian Versicherungsnummer is built

The Versicherungsnummer (VSNR, often called SV-Nummer) is a purely numeric, ten-digit identifier. Per the Austrian social insurance federation it is laid out as LLL P TT MM JJ: serial number, check digit, day, month, two-digit year. The serial runs from 100 upward regardless of sex and century.

Check digit: each digit except P is multiplied by a factor (3, 7, 9 for the serial; 5, 8 for the day; 4, 2 for the month; 1, 6 for the year) and the products are summed. P is the remainder after dividing by 11. If the remainder would be 10, the next-higher serial number is used instead, so a number whose sum leaves 10 does not exist. Worked example: for 123 7 01 01 80 the sum is 62 and 62 mod 11 = 7.

Placeholder months: when the exact birth date is unknown, or all serial numbers for that date are taken, the insurer forms the number with a fictitious month of 13, 14 or 15. The tool accepts these and labels them. The birth date may also change later without the number changing.

Format and checksum only — not a registry lookup

This tool does not contact the social insurance system. Note this is the social insurance number, not the Austrian tax number (Steuernummer), which has 9 digits and a different structure.

Frequently asked questions

How do I validate an Austrian SV-Nummer?

Check it has 10 digits, the serial is 100 or higher, and the 4th digit equals the weighted sum of the other nine digits (factors 3, 7, 9, 5, 8, 4, 2, 1, 6) modulo 11.

What does month 13, 14 or 15 mean in an Austrian insurance number?

It is a fictitious birth month used when the birth date is unknown or the available serial numbers for that date were exhausted.

Does the SV-Nummer show gender?

No. The serial number is assigned without regard to sex or century.

Is the SV-Nummer the same as the Austrian tax number?

No. The tax number (Steuernummer) is a separate 9-digit identifier issued by the tax office.
