Tipping customs differ by country, region and salon and no rule sets the percentage, so every percent here is yours to choose.

Worked example

A cut for $80 tipped 20% to Sam and a colour for $150 tipped 18% to Jo, with 13% tax. Tips on the pre-tax price: Sam $16.00, Jo $27.00, total tip $43.00. Services $230.00 plus tax $29.90 = $259.90, so the grand total is $302.90. Tip on price plus tax instead and Sam gets $18.08 and Jo $30.51.

How it works

For each service: tip = price x tip percent (or price x (1 + tax rate) x tip percent if you tip on the tax-inclusive total). Tips are added up per provider, so you know what to hand each person. Grand total = services + tax + tips.

Rounding up raises the grand total to the next whole amount and spreads the extra across the tips in proportion, so the per-person amounts still add up to the tip total. If there is no tip, the extra goes on the first service.

No official rate. There is no rule or standard for tipping at a salon. Percentages in this tool are numbers you enter. Some salons include a service charge or pool tips; check your receipt so you do not tip twice, and note that cash tips and card tips may be handled differently by the business.

Sources and basis (checked 2026-10-04): arithmetic on the numbers you enter; no external rate is applied.

FAQ

How much should I tip at a hair salon?

There is no official figure. Customs vary by country and salon, and you set the percent for each service. The calculator shows what any percentage costs in dollars.

Should I tip on the price before or after tax?

Both are common. Pick the option that matches your habit and the calculator shows the result. The difference at 13% tax is about 13% of the tip.

How do I tip more than one person?

Add one service per person, set the provider name and the percent. Services with the same provider name are combined in the per-person list.

What if the salon already adds a service charge?

Check your receipt. If a service charge is included, you may not want to add a tip on top. Enter 0% for those services.

Why round the total up?

A whole total is easier to pay or to leave in cash. The extra is split across the tips.
