Collecting and Hobby Calculators

Shelf space.

Thickness varies a lot between paperbacks, hardbacks, LPs in sleeves and bagged comics, so this tool measures yours. Stack ten of them, measure the stack, enter your shelf length, and find out how many fit and how many shelves you need. Runs in your browser.

Answer

Items per shelf = usable shelf length / thickness of one item. If 10 records measure 3 cm, each is 3 mm thick, and an 80 cm shelf with 10% free space holds 240. Four shelves hold 960, so 450 records take 2 shelves.

Worked example

10 records stacked measure 3 cm = 30 mm, so 3 mm each. Shelf 80 cm = 800 mm, less 10% free space = 720 mm usable. 720 / 3 = 240 records per shelf, 4 shelves hold 960. For 450 records: 450 / 240 = 1.88, so 2 shelves and 510 spare spaces on 4.

How it works

Thickness per item = stack thickness / items in stack. Usable length = shelf length x (1 - free space %). Items per shelf = usable length / thickness per item, rounded down. Inches convert at exactly 25.4 mm.

Why measure. There is no built-in thickness because paperbacks, hardbacks, LPs in sleeves and bagged and boarded comics differ by title, edition and sleeve. Measure a stack of at least 10 for a good average. Also check the shelf can carry the weight: books and records are heavy, so check shelf sag and span.

Sources and basis (checked 2026-10-05): Arithmetic on your own measurements; no external data is used. Inch = 25.4 mm exactly (1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement).

FAQ

How many records fit on a shelf?

It depends on sleeve thickness and shelf length. Measure ten of your records stacked and enter the thickness; the calculator does the division.

How many books fit per shelf?

Measure ten books spine to spine, enter the stack thickness and your shelf length, and read items per shelf.

How much free space should I leave?

Enough to slide items in and out without forcing them, and room to grow. The 10% default is our assumption.

Does it work for comics and trading card boxes?

Yes, for anything stored upright in a row. Measure your bagged comics or boxes the same way.

Does it check shelf strength?

No. Heavy collections can bend long shelves, so see the Shelf Sag Calculator for the load.

Disclaimer

Informational arithmetic from measurements you enter. Allow for shelf thickness and uprights when measuring usable length, and check the load rating of your shelving.
