Braiding hair packs.
How much hair a style takes depends on braid size, length, thickness and brand, so the honest answer comes from one test braid. Tell the tool how many braids you are doing and how much of a pack one braid used to get packs to buy, with spare hair and cost. Runs in your browser.

Worked example
You plan 60 braids and your test braid used a quarter of a pack, so a pack makes 4 braids. 60 / 4 = 15 packs exactly. With 10% spare, 16.5, rounded up to 17 packs. At $6 a pack that is $102, or $1.70 per braid, with 8 braids’ worth of hair left over.
How it works
braids per pack = 1 / share of a pack per braid, or braids you got from a pack, or grams per pack / grams per braid. packs = round up(braids needed / braids per pack x (1 + spare %)). Cost = packs x price per pack.
Why you measure. Popular answers like "5 packs for medium knotless" are rules of thumb that depend on length, braid size, how much hair goes into each braid and the brand, and none is an official figure. Braid one test braid to the length and size you plan, then enter that.
Leftover braids are the whole braids' worth of hair you will have after the packs you buy, which is useful if you are planning a second set.
Sources and basis (checked 2026-10-04): arithmetic on a test braid you measure; no figure is assumed. Ounce conversion: 1 avoirdupois ounce = 28.349523125 g (NIST, unit conversion).
FAQ
How many packs of braiding hair do I need?
Divide the braids you are doing by the braids one pack makes, add a little spare and round up. If a test braid uses a quarter of a pack, 60 braids need 15 packs, or 17 with 10% spare.
How do I find out how many braids a pack makes?
Do one braid at your planned length and size using hair from a new pack, then see what fraction of the pack it used. Or weigh the braid and compare it with the weight printed on the pack.
Why not a fixed number for knotless braids?
Braid size, length, how thick you want each braid and the brand change the amount a lot. A fixed number would be a guess. A test braid takes a few minutes and replaces the guess with your own number.
How much spare hair should I add?
It is up to you. 10% is a common cushion for waste and trimming. Use 0 if you want the exact fraction.
Do packs have the same amount of hair across brands?
No. Check the weight on your pack and use the grams method if you switch brands.
