Closet rod and shelf space.

Rod length needed = hanging garments x space per garment. Hunker gives about 2.5 inches per item so clothes can be reached without crushing. At that figure 40 garments need 100 inches, so a 96 inch rod is 4 inches short. Add shelf width to see how many folded items fit. Inches or centimetres; runs in your browser.

Hunker's figure is about 2.5 inches (6.35 cm). Use less for a tight fit, more for bulky coats.

Worked example

You have 40 hanging garments and a 96 inch rod. At 2.5 inches each you need 40 x 2.5 = 100 inches, so the rod is 4 inches short and holds 96 / 2.5 = 38 garments. For shelves: a 48 inch shelf with 12 inch stacks holds 4 stacks; with 2 shelves of 6 items per stack that is 4 x 2 x 6 = 48 folded items. Your 30 folded items fit, with room for 18 more (5 stacks needed).

How it works

rod needed = hanging garments x space per garment; garments that fit = rod length / space per garment, rounded down. Shelf capacity = stacks across (shelf width / stack width, rounded down) x shelves x items per stack.

Space per garment. Hunker says to factor about 2.5 inches of rod space per apparel item, which leaves room to reach in and avoids crushing, and gives 4 feet (48 inches) of closet rod space per person as the general rule. These are rules of thumb from one home-improvement article, not a standard; bulky coats need more and thin shirts less.

Rod height. The same source says a standard single rod is about 64 to 65 inches from the floor; for a double-rod setup the top rod sits at 80 inches and the lower at 40 inches. Measure your own clothes: a long dress needs a higher rod than a shirt.

FAQ

How much closet rod space do I need?

Multiply the number of hanging garments by the space each takes. Hunker suggests about 2.5 inches per item so you can reach in without crushing clothes, which makes 40 garments need 100 inches.

How much hanging space does one person need?

Hunker gives a general rule of 4 feet of closet rod space per person. It is a rule of thumb, and your wardrobe may need more or less.

How high should a closet rod be?

Hunker gives about 64 to 65 inches from the floor for a single rod, and 80 and 40 inches for the top and lower rods of a double-rod system. Check against your longest garment.

How many clothes fit on a closet rod?

Rod length divided by the space per garment, rounded down. A 96 inch rod at 2.5 inches per garment holds 38.

How do I work out how many folded items a shelf holds?

Divide the shelf width by the width of a stack and round down to get stacks per shelf, then multiply by the shelves and by items per stack. Measure a real stack of your own clothes for the best numbers.

What this calculates, and what it does not

Space per garment is a rule of thumb from one source and varies with hangers and fabrics. Always measure your own closet; this tool does not check rod load limits.
