Worked example

A traditional sew-in at 20 inches falls in the 18 to 22 inch row of the Govihair guide: 4 bundles, or 400 g at 100 g a bundle. The Vinisay length chart gives 3 bundles at the same length, with or without a closure, so the two sellers differ by a bundle. Choose the closure option that drops one bundle (the Vinisay rule) and the style range falls to 3 bundles. Take both numbers to your stylist before you buy.

How it works

The tool looks up your style and finished length in a table of seller ranges. Between two rows it rounds up to the next row. Traditional sew-in: 3 bundles up to 16 inches, 4 for 18 to 22 inches, 4 to 5 from 24 inches. Full sew-in with no leave-out: 3 to 4, then 4 to 5, then 5 or more. Partial sew-in with leave-out: 2 to 3. Braidless: 2 to 3, and 3 to 4 above 20 inches. Vixen: 3 to 4 for four parts, 2 to 3 for two or three parts. Versatile: 2 to 3, and 3 to 4 from 20 inches. Grams = bundles x grams per bundle.

The cross-check row uses the Vinisay length chart, rounded up between rows (no closure / with closure): up to 14 inches 2 / 2; 16 to 18 inches 2 to 3 / 2; 20 to 22 inches 3 / 3; 24 to 26 inches 3 to 4 / 3; 28 inches and longer 4 or more / 3 to 4. Choosing "one fewer bundle" subtracts one from the style range, never below 1, and leaves the Vinisay chart as published. Bundle counts also move with texture, head size, braid pattern and the fullness you want.

FAQ

How many bundles do I need for a sew-in?

Seller guides range from 2 to 5 bundles depending on style, length and fullness. This tool shows the range for your style and length and a second seller length chart as a cross-check. Confirm the count with your stylist.

How many bundles for a sew-in with leave-out?

Govihair gives 2 to 3 bundles for a partial sew-in with leave-out, depending on how much of your head the hair covers. Longer lengths may need the upper end.

How many bundles for a full sew-in?

For a full sew-in with no leave-out, Govihair lists 3 to 4 bundles at 10 to 16 inches, 4 to 5 at 18 to 22 inches, and 5 or more from 24 inches up.

How many bundles for 20 inch hair?

For a traditional sew-in at 20 inches, Govihair gives 4 bundles, while the Vinisay length chart gives 3 bundles at 20 to 22 inches. Sellers differ, so ask your stylist.

Does a closure or frontal change the number of bundles?

Sellers disagree. Vinisay says to drop one bundle, and Curl Centric says a closure usually does not change the number because it covers the spot where a leave-out would go. This tool lets you pick either.

How much does one bundle weigh?

About 100 g is the usual listing weight. Check your listing and change the grams per bundle if it differs.
