Worked example

A dog measuring 28 in from nose to base of tail and 22 in tall standing needs a crate at least 28 + 2 = 30 in long (up to 32 in) and 22 + 2 = 24 in tall. Of the standard crate sizes, a 30 in crate is only about 21 in tall, so the smallest one that fits both numbers is the 36 in crate. At 55 lb the typical weight chart also points to a 36 in crate.

How it works

Length is measured nose to base of the tail, not to the tail tip. Add 2 to 4 inches so the dog can stand, turn around and lie down, but not so much that a puppy can use one end as a toilet. Height is the dog standing: the top of the head or the top of the ears if they stand up, plus 2 to 4 inches. The tool picks the smallest standard crate whose length and typical interior height clear the minimum.

Standard sizes used: 24 in (to about 25 lb), 30 in (to 40 lb), 36 in (to 70 lb), 42 in (to 90 lb), 48 in (to 110 lb). Over that, look for a giant-breed crate. These are the typical retail chart; brands vary by an inch or two, so check the interior dimensions of the exact crate.

Puppies: buy for the adult size and use a divider so the crate stays just big enough for now.

Sources and basis (checked 2026-10-05): the crate sizing rule (length plus 2 to 4 in) is a common rule of thumb in dog-crate guidance and typical retail crate size charts by dog weight; it is not a published standard. For crate-training itself, see the American Kennel Club guide. The weight chart is a convention, not a standard.

FAQ

What size crate does my dog need?

Measure from the nose to the base of the tail and add 2 to 4 inches for the length, and measure standing height to the top of the head or ears and add 2 to 4 inches. Pick the smallest crate that meets both numbers.

What size crate for a 50 pound dog?

A 36 inch crate is the typical size for dogs of about 40 to 70 pounds. Measure your dog as well, because tall or long breeds can need a bigger crate than weight alone suggests.

Should a dog crate be bigger than the dog?

Only a little. The dog should be able to stand without ducking, turn around and stretch out. A much bigger crate loses the den feel and makes house training harder.

What size crate for a puppy?

Buy for the expected adult size and use a divider to shrink the space now, then move the divider back as the puppy grows.

Do I measure the tail?

No. Measure to the base of the tail. A long tail does not need crate length.
