Formula: Individual = units x per-item fee. Professional = flat monthly fee. Break-even units = monthly fee / per-item fee; the Professional plan is cheaper from the next whole unit above that number.

Fees used: Canada CAD 1.49 per item and CAD 29.99 a month; UK £0.75 per item and £25 a month excluding VAT; Australia $0.99 per item and $49.95 a month excluding GST (Amazon.com.au only; merged global accounts are billed differently).

Beyond cost: Amazon's feature lists show Professional adding restricted-category approval, bulk listing tools, API access and top placement on product pages, which can matter more than the fee difference. Plan fees are separate from referral and FBA fees.

FAQ

How many units make the Professional plan worth it?

Break-even is the monthly fee divided by the per-item fee: about 20.1 units in Canada, 33.3 in the UK and 50.5 in Australia, so Professional is cheaper from 21, 34 and 51 units a month respectively.

Do plan fees include VAT or GST?

UK and Australian plan fees are quoted excluding VAT and GST. Tax may be added depending on your registration.

Do referral fees change with the plan?

No. Referral fees are charged on every sale under either plan and are in addition to the plan fee. In Australia the Individual plan's $0.99 per item is also listed as its fixed closing fee, and it is the same charge, not an extra one.
