Shopify costs

Shopify upgrade break-even, when a higher plan pays.

Pick two plans and your average order value. See the monthly sales where the higher plan starts to cost less.

Break-even orders = extra subscription / saving per order. In Canada, paid yearly, at a CA$100 average order, Grow beats Basic from 310 orders (CA$31,000.00) a month; Advanced beats Basic from 880 orders (CA$88,000.00).

Worked example

Canada, paid yearly, average order CA$100, all standard cards. Basic costs 2.8% + 0.30 per order and Grow 2.6% + 0.30, so Grow saves 0.2% of CA$100 = CA$0.20 an order. Grow costs CA$62 a month more (99 - 37), so break-even is 62 / 0.20 = 310 orders, about CA$31,000.00 in sales. Grow versus Advanced (CA$290 more a month, saving 0.2% of each order) breaks even at 1450 orders.

How it works

Cost on a plan = subscription + orders x (average order x percentage + fixed fee). Setting the two plans equal gives orders = (subscription difference) / (per-order saving). The fixed fee per order is the same across plans in each region, so only the percentage difference matters, and it is applied to your card mix. Because the fixed fee cancels, the break-even sales for one card type are the extra subscription divided by the rate difference, whatever the order value. Below the break-even the cheaper plan wins and above it the higher plan wins. Only Shopify Payments card fees are compared; outside gateways, apps and the Plus plan's "starts at" price (no yearly figure is listed) are simplifications.

FAQ

When should I upgrade from Shopify Basic to Grow?

When monthly orders pass the break-even shown above. On the Canadian prices read in October 2026 with a CA$100 average order, paid yearly, that is around 310 orders a month.

Is Shopify Advanced worth it?

Only when your per-order card savings exceed the extra subscription. With the Canadian prices and a CA$100 average order it takes about 880 orders a month versus Basic. Advanced also adds features that this calculator does not price.

Does a bigger average order change the break-even?

It changes the number of orders but not the sales figure. The fixed fee per order is the same on every plan, so for one card type the break-even monthly sales equals the extra subscription divided by the percentage-rate difference, whatever the order value.

Do other features matter?

Possibly. Higher plans add staff accounts and other features that are not priced here. This tool compares card costs and subscription only.

Should I use yearly or monthly pricing?

Yearly billing lowers every subscription, which changes the gap between plans, so the break-even moves. Both options are in the calculator; the annual versus monthly calculator shows the saving.
