How do you read 98H on a tire?

The service description follows the size on the sidewall. In 225/45R17 94W the 94 is the load index (670 kg, about 1,477 lb per tire) and the W is the speed symbol (270 km/h, 168 mph). Some light truck and van tires show two numbers, such as 103/100S: the first is the single-fitment load index and the second is the dual-fitment index for twin rear wheels. This decoder reads both, and brackets such as 94(W) mean the tire is rated above the speed shown.

Use the tool to compare a replacement tire with the one your vehicle maker specifies. Load index and speed symbol must be at least what the placard or manual lists. The full lookup tables are on the load index chart and speed rating chart pages.
